Sloan’s Lake & West Highland
Denver’s largest lake, a 2.6-mile loop with the skyline on one side and the Front Range on the other, ringed by Tudors, bungalows and mid-century ranches. Highlands Square is the neighborhood’s corner store.
Sloan’s Lake is a 177-acre lake inside a 284-acre park — the largest body of water in Denver and the city’s second-largest park. Thomas Sloan is said to have created it by accident in the 1860s while digging a well. Today it is the neighborhood’s front yard: a paved perimeter path, boat launch, tennis courts and playgrounds, with the downtown skyline to the east and the mountains to the west.
The blocks around the lake were built out in waves, which shows in the architecture. Brick Tudors and bungalows from the 1920s and 30s on the north and east sides; ranches and split-levels from the 1950s and 60s toward the west and south; and, on the former St. Anthony Hospital site on the south shore, a new mixed-use district with a movie theater, restaurants and apartments. West Highland — the grid between the lake and 38th Avenue — is anchored by Highlands Square at 32nd and Lowell, a walkable strip of restaurants, coffee, a wine shop and a hardware store.
